The easiest way is to just try the URL. :-)
If the URL in turn redirects somewhere else it can be hard to catch without using "HTTP debugging tools". Instead you can use the API, for example:
http://metamark.net/api/rest/simple?s...
will show the long url for http://xrl.us/jx
